| John Marshall's 2008 show brings to the Fairfax Gallery his largest herd of paintings so far. Clients will be able to see twenty-six finely executed, varied and unique works of his beloved subject; the cow. All of these demonstrate his usual hallmarks; the mix of rural and urban, an uncanny eye for drawing out quirks and personalities and a sensitivity and pathos that draws in the observer. We see his usual confident mark making and bold use of colour typified by paintings such as Castlemast and Montgomery Coco, but he also brings to the mix an increased development in technique. Duffy Fisher is a fine example of this progression in portraiture. In this painting he makes superb use of a glazing technique which he layers up over the oil to create increased depth and realism. It takes his work to another level. The collection, as a whole, is testament to John's hard work and his commitment to continually stretching himself as a painter and certainly looks set to delight his loyal and ever-increasing following. | |
