Kathryn Matthews

Honfleur 11

Oil On Board

£395.00

Referred to as one of France's prettiest towns, Honfleur has attracted the attention of painters such as Courbet, Boudin, Monet and Jongkind contributing to the later formation of the Impressionist movement. This exciting new collection by Kathryn Matthews consists of sixteen oil on boards, each given independent numerical abstracted titles 'Honfleur 1-16. Distinctive features of the coastal commune remain evident, most notably through the depiction of the statuesque quayside terraces. The artist plays with this sense of familiarity, with varying measures of abstraction, creating a collection of works that exist somewhere between reality and the power of imagination. This sense of ambiguity is enhanced by optical flares of colour and palettes a riot with fauve-like vivacity.

All of Kathryn Matthew's paintings are framed in a bespoke, hand finished white wooden frame. Please allow approx 10cm each side to the 25 x 25cm board size.

Kathryn Matthews studied Visual Art at the De Montfort University in Leicester (1990-93). She has exhibited widely throughout the UK and internationally with shows in New York, Dubai and Paris. The artist is best known for her fresh perspectives of British coastal scenes and her vibrant colour palette inspired by her extensive travels. The stripping and re-application of layers and glazes and bold textural mark making gives the work a luminous and often ethereal quality.
